Position summary
The Student Supervisor, under the direction of the Circulation Services Supervisor, is responsible for the JWL operations during evening hours and on Sundays when regular staff are not available. The position is responsible for overseeing the circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, and stacks maintenance functions of the library. The Student Supervisor monitors library activities, ensures the safety of students, staff, and the building, and reports any unusual situations to Campus Safety. This position serves as the main point of contact during evening hours and on Sundays and must maintain good public relations with all library patrons.
Qualifications summary
Applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student with excellent verbal, writing, and public relations skills, with a helpful service-oriented approach, and excellent computer skills with experience using Word and Excel. The applicant must have the ability to handle stress and emergency situations, be dependable and attentive to detail with accuracy. A mature person with excellent judgment and the ability to use discretion and sensitively handle confidential information is preferred.
Duties and responsibilities
- Supervises student assistants at the Circulation Desk and supports them in maintaining library service standards as they perform tasks associated with circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan, and stacks maintenance.
- Provides accurate basic information and directions as needed and interacts professionally and courteously with library patrons, enforcing JWL policies.
- Performs stacks functions such as pickup, sorting, counting, and shelving reference materials.
- Makes continuous rounds through the building when on duty to observe activities and ensure the safety of library patrons.
- Follows emergency protocols promptly as outlined in the JWL Emergency Manual.
- Calls Campus Safety immediately for the following situations, among others:
- Physical abuse
- Difficult or belligerent patrons
- Physical altercation
- Feel a situation is getting out of hand
- Theft or injury
- Fire.
- Closes the James White Library at midnight during the regular semester and at 10:00 pm during summer sessions, following all safety and security precautions to maintain the security of the library collection when the building is closed.
Maintains communication with Circulation Services Supervisor and reports problems encountered during shifts so appropriate actions may be taken. Use libincidents@andrews.edu to document and send information about problems and issues encountered.

Qualifications
- Excellent verbal, writing, and public relations skills with a helpful service-oriented approach.
- Must commit to at least two years working in Patron Services.
- Excellent computer skills with experience using Word and Excel.
- Ability to handle stress and emergency situations.
- Must be dependable and attentive to detail and accuracy.
- A mature person with excellent judgment and the ability to use discretion and sensitively handle confidential information.

Needs ability to work with little supervision, after initial training.
Will interact with supervisor, potentially by email with recipient library staff, and occasionally with the staff at the campus Post Office.
Physical demands
Must be able to lift boxes up to 50 pounds.
